________________ JAIN JOURNAL 12. A comparison of the Jaina and Hindu views with the modern of the Solar System In both the Jaina and the Hindu views, in the content of the whole, the Sun, and its family, the Moon and the Stars occupy a rather insignificant place. It is difficult even to conceive if the family of the Sun including its children (planets) and grand-children (satellites) was at all recognised. But if still we are to build up an order analogous to the modern notion of the Solar System, it would look like something as given below in which, it will be seen, the starting point is the Earth, and not the Sun as in the modern notion. jaina Hindu Modern ☆ Dhruva ( Pole-star ) ś ani (Saturn) Saptarsi Pluto Mangal ( Mars ) Sant (Saturn) Neptune Brhaspati (Jupite Brhaspati (Jupiter) Uranus śukra (Venus ) Mangal (Mars) Saturn Budh (Mercury) Sukra (Venus ) Jupiter Nakşatras ( Stars ) Budh (Mercury) Mars Prakirna-taras Comets!) kşatras ( Stars ) Earth e condra e moon, e Candra ( Moon candra (Moon) Venus surya (Sun) surya ( Mercury Meru Meru Sun Jambu-dvipa Jambu-dvipa Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
