After reading the article on Pizza Hut's beef based sauce in the Sept./Dec. 1995 issue of the Jain Digest, I contacted their offices and received the following letter. I appreciate being informed about this situation.

Dear Pizza Hut Customer:
Thank you for your inquiry concerning animal products in our Pizza Hut ingredients and products. I hope the following information is helpful to you.
Cheese Enzymes - Pizza Hut cheese enzymes are either bovine or vegetable and made from biosynthesized rennet. If you need more information, you may contact your local FDA office.
Sauce Our Pasta Sauce and Breadstick Sauce contains a Beef Base:... Our regular

Pizza Sauce does NOT contain a Beef Base but does contain an animal by-product (enzyme). This is due to the fact that there are three cheeses in the sauce and the milk used to produce the cheese contains enzymes which occur naturally in all living things and can not be extracted. However, the sauce that is used for our Stuffed Crust Pizza does contain chicken fat. This sauce is ONLY used for our Stuffed Crust Pizza. If you would like to try our Stuffed Crust Pizza you can request them to make it using our regular pizza sauce.
Vegetable Oil Our oil is made up of soybean or cotton seed oil, or a combination of both. NO palm, peanut or coconut oils are used.
