In this new book, David Jenkins of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto writes that "The book is unique from three perspectives. First, it is comprehensive, dealing with man's possible dietary evolution in relation to plant foods and the implication of plant-food consumption on health, environment and the development of the humanitarian philosophy." "Secondly, it is both studious and, at the same time, eminently readable. Thirdly, it is written by authors whose upbringing as Jains raised in the midst of Western culture, allows them to challenge most effectively the life-style which we, in the West, regard as normal."
