________________ ( 14 ) uplift of which they preach the highest religion of Ahinsa, Truth, Non-steeling, Brahmacharya and Non-possession. They have all along kept alive the highest ideals of their religious and spiritual life by strictly adhering to the rules of conduct laid down by Lord Mahavira and all other previous Tirthankaras. They take to holy order only with the object of the enobling of their soul and imparting benefit to others and not with the object of outwardly show and of earning a livelihood or other earthly objects. Jain Sadhus neither beg money nor do they earn money-they have no shrines or maths dedicated to them where to live. They stay in suitable houses of Jain lay people so long as householders allow then to stay there. Terapanthi Sadhus devote their time in religious discourses and for the uplift of mankind in general, by exhorting them to lead a perfect life.
