The young man had returned home with awakened sex-impulse, and no longer quite ashamed of admitting the desire to himself. As a matter of fact, very few normal heings arc. Thc pretension is hypocritical. Back to the village, he might have relapsed into the habit of inhibition or taken to something much Worsc--self-abusc, sodomy or clandestine sex-intercourse under sordid conditions. Negative morality, imposed by our social conditions, frequently encourages these practices which are worse than immoral, because they are physically harmful, aesthetically revolting, and corrupt the emotional life of the youth, making them vulgar, often vicious, and generally hypocritical.
