f the Jain Philosophy can be compared with body the Syadwad (the doctrine of manifold predication) can be called its soul. If the soul is taken out of the body, the body becomes useless. If this Syadwad, the soul of Jain philosophy, is taken out, the Jain philosophy would not only not have any claim to be called a system of philosophy but will become useless like the lifeless body. To bring out the real nature of a thing Syadwad is the only instrument. Without its help truth cannot, in any way, be made manifest. That is why other systems of philosophy had to take recourse to Syadwad (though not openly) when Sarwathawad could not adequately serve the purpose. Some philosophers have tried to prove Syadwad a false doctrine but their efforts have always been a subject of ridicule by learneds wise men.
