both taught a group of three hundred ascetics each. The Sthaviras Metārya and Prabhasa were both of the Kaundinya gotra and each taught a group of three hundred ascetics. For this reason, dear Sirs, is it being said that Bhagavan Mahavira had nine ganas and eleven ganadharas.
प्रत्येक ने तीनसौ-तीनसौ श्रमणों को वाचना दी थी। कौडिन्य गोत्रीय स्थविर मेतार्य और स्थविर प्रभास प्रत्येक ने तीन सौ-तीन सौ साधुनों को वाचना दी थी। हे पार्य! इस कारण से ऐसा कहा जाता है कि श्रमण भगवान् महावीर के नौ गण और ग्यारह गणधर थे। अर्थात् अकम्पित और अचलभ्राता की एक वाचना होने से और मेतार्य एवं प्रभास की एक वाचना होने से कुल नौ वाचनायें होती हैं । एतदर्थ नौ गण माने गये हैं। २०३. श्रमण भगवान् महावीर के ये समस्त ग्यारह गणधर द्वादशांगी और चतुर्दश पूर्व के ज्ञाता थे तथा समस्त गणिपिटक के धारक थे। ये समस्त राजगृह नगर में जलरहित मासिक-भक्त तप (अनशन) करके कालधर्म (निर्वाण) को प्राप्त हुए, यावत् सर्व दुःखों से मुक्त हुए । स्थविर इन्द्रभूति और स्थविर प्रार्य सुधर्म नामक दोनों गणधर भगवान् महावीर के निर्वाण के बाद मुक्ति को गए।
203. All the eleven ganadharas and the nine ganas under Bhagavān Mahavira were versed in the twelve Anga and the fourteen Piirsa sacredtreatises; they knew the entire doctrine of the ganins. They all breathed their last in the city of Rājagsha, after practising the vow of taking one
meal, without water, in a whole month. They, then, attained parinirvana, reaching a state beyond pain. Sthavira Indrabbūti and Sthavira Arya Sudharma were liberated after the parinirwina of Bhagavān Mahāvira. 204. The present nirgrantha monks are all spiritual descendants of the ascetic Arya Sudharma; the other ganadharas have left no descendants.

२०४. ग्राज-कल ये जो श्रमण निर्ग्रन्थ विचरण करते हैं वे सब आर्य सुधर्म अनगार की सन्तानें हैं। शेष दसों गरणधरों की अपत्य-शिष्य परम्परा पृथक न चलने से व्युच्छेद हो गई।
