He then alighted, shed all his finery and plucked out his hair in four handfuls. He became a homeless mendicant and put on a holy robe. He undertook a vow to partake of only one meal, without water, out of every six regular meals. With him, as his companions, were four thousand fearless and noble ksatriyas and men of royal lineage.
वहां आकर उत्तम अशोक वृक्ष के नीचे यावत् स्वयमेव चार मुष्टि लुंचन करते हैं । चतुर्मुष्टि लोच कर, जल रहित छद्रुभक्त (दो उपवास) कर, उत्तराषाढ़ा नक्षत्र का योग आने पर, उग्रवंशीय, भोगवंशीय, राजन्यवंशीय और क्षत्रियवंशीय चार हजार पुरुषों के साथ, एक देवदूष्य को धारण कर, मुण्डित होकर, गृह त्यागकर, अनगारत्व स्वीकार करते हैं। १६६. कौशलिक अर्हत् ऋषभ एक हजार वर्ष तक शरीर की पोर से सर्वदा उदासीन और अनासक्त रहे, यावत् प्रात्मा को भावित करते हुए उन्हें एक हजार वर्ष व्यतीत हो गए। उसके पश्चात् जब हेमन्त ऋतु का चतुर्थ मास, सातवां पक्ष फाल्गुन कृष्ण चल रहा था तब उस फाल्गुन कृष्ण एकादशी के दिन, पूर्वाह्न काल में, पुरिमताल नगर के [बाहर] शकटमुख नामक उद्यान में, श्रेष्ठ वट वृक्ष के नीचे, जलरहित अष्टम भक्त (तीन उपवास) करते हुए, उत्तराषाढ़ा नक्षत्र का योग आने पर, ध्यान मुद्रा
196. Arhat Rsabha, the Kosalin, remained steadfast in an attitude of 'giving up the body' (utsrstakāya) and 'renouncing the body' (iyaktadeha) for a period of a thousand years. He meditated on the self and attained the ultimate and infinite kevala-knowledge on the cleventh of the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna, that is, the seventh fortnight of the fourth month of the winter season. The event occurred during the early hour of the day, when Arhat Rşabha was sitting in meditation under a great nyagrodha tree in the park called Sakatamukha in the outskirts of the town of Purimatăla. Arhat Rşabha was, at that time, observing the vow of eating only one meal,
