He spent six rains in Mithilā, two in Bhadrikā and one cach in Alabhikā, Srāvasti and Panitabhūmi, which is in the Vajja-country. His last season of rains was spent in the town of Papa, where he stayed in the scribcs' working-hall of king Hastipala.
निश्रा में भगवान ने चौदह चातुर्मास किये। छह मिथिला नगरी में, दो भद्रिका नगरी में, एक पालम्भिका नगरी में, एक थावस्ती नगरी में, एक प्रणीतभूमि नामक अनार्यदेश में चातुर्मास किया और एक अन्तिम चातुर्मास करने के लिये भगवान मध्यमपापा के राजा हस्तिपाल की रज्जुकसभा में पाए। १२३. वहां जिस समय भगवान् मध्यमपापा के राजा । हस्तिपाल की रज्जुकसभा में अन्तिम वर्षावास करने के लिये पधारे हुए थे उस समय वर्षा ऋतु का चौथा मास, सातवां पक्ष, कार्तिक कृष्ण चल रहा था तब उस कार्तिक कृष्ण अमावस्या की अन्तिम रात्रि चल रही थी। उस रात्रि को श्रमण भगवान महावीर कालधर्म को प्राप्त हुए अर्थात् संसार को त्यागकर चले गए। जन्म-ग्रहरण की परम्परा का समूलोच्छेद कर चले गए। उनके जन्म, जरा और मरण के समस्त बन्धन नष्ट हो गए। भगवान् सिद्ध हुए, बुद्ध हुए, मुक्त हुए, अन्तकृत् हुए, समस्त दुःखों का नाश कर परिनिर्वाण को प्राप्त हुए।

123. Bhagavān Mahavira breathed his last at Pipa in the scribes' hallofking Hastipāla, and passed away from this world. This happened during the fourth month of rain in the seventh fortnight of that season-the dark half of the month of Kartikaon the fifteenth night of that fortnight. Bhagavān Mahavira had freed himself from the fetters of life, death and decay; he had attained total perfection and had become enlightened and liberated. He had dealt the last blow to all worldly passions and had become fulfilled, reaching a state beyond pain. The year when Sramaņa Bhagavan Mahāvira breathed his last and attained liberation, was the year called Candra which is the second year of the five-year cycle. The month was the month called Pritivardhana. The fortnight was Nandivardhana. The day was the day named Suvratūgni,
