[1,2,10] Dravyapramanaanugame Oghaniddeso
[57] Appamattasanjata dravyapramnena kevadiya? Sankhejja. || 8 || The Appramattasanyata (non-negligent and restrained) jivas, in terms of dravyapramana (quantum of substance), are Sankhyata (countable).
Although the word 'Sankhejja' occurring in the sutra can be interpreted in all the possible numerical options, here the lower numerical value should be accepted. The reason is that if the meaning of Kotiprthakatva (multiplicity) was intended, then there was no need for a separate sutra after the previous one. Also, the sutra "The duration of Pramattasanyata is less by a countable number of times than that of Appramattasanyata" indicates that the meaning of Kotiprthakatva is not intended here.
Now, to explain the dravyapramana of the four Upasamakas (subsiders), two subsequent sutras are obtained:
Cadunnhupasamagga dravyapramnena kevadiya? Pavesana ekko va do va tinna va ukkasen'a cavvanna. || 9 ||
The Upasamaka (subsider) jivas of the four guna-sthanas (stages of spiritual development), in terms of dravyapramana, are how many? With respect to entry, they are one, or two, or three; thus, at the utmost, they are fifty-four.
In each stage of the Upasama-sreni (series of subsidence), one jiva with the subsidence of Charitra-mohaniya (deluding karma of conduct) enters at the minimum, and fifty-four jivas enter at the maximum. This is the general statement. Specifically, within eight additional time-periods worthy of the Upasama-sreni, there are eight time-periods. In the first time-period, starting from one jiva, up to sixteen jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the second time-period, starting from one jiva, up to twenty-four jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the third time-period, starting from one jiva, up to thirty jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the fourth time-period, starting from one jiva, up to thirty-six jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the fifth time-period, starting from one jiva, up to forty-two jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the sixth time-period, starting from one jiva, up to forty-eight jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum. In the seventh and eighth time-periods, in each, starting from one jiva, up to fifty-four jivas ascend the Upasama-sreni at the maximum.
Now, the enumeration of these Upasamaka jivas is done with respect to the duration of time.
Addha paduccca sankhejja. || 10 ||
With respect to the duration of time, all the jivas accumulated in the Upasama-sreni are Sankhyata (countable). || 10 ||
By aggregating all the jivas accumulated at the maximum in each guna-sthana of the Upasama-sreni within the aforementioned eight time-periods, their total count is three hundred and four (16+24+30+36+42+48+54+54=304).
