________________ Nirvanakalika. 19 Jain Education Inte Era i. e. 56 B. C. and ten years more if we take 470 Vira Era as the date of Padlipta's consecration as an Acharya. It may be considered rather improbable by Historical Investigators, but when we definitely know of the long lives of Jain Sadhus of the time, e. g. Vajraswami lived 88 years and his pupil Vajrasena 128 years, the period of life ascribed to Padlipta does not appear improbable. What I think is that the beginning of Padlipta's life is definitely connected with Aryakhaputacharya, and the end with Hala and the foundation of Palitana. We have also to take into account Padlipta's great-pupil Siddhasena being contemporary with King Vikrama. Siddhasena died in S. Y. 30. It is not therefore possible to bring down considerably the date of Padlipta's birth except by 10 years. It may therefore be taken that Padlipta flourished in the first century of the Vikrama Era. An important incident with which the "Prabhavaka-Chritra" connects Padlipta is that he performed with the aid of Shali-Vahana, Dhwaja-Pratishatha (Flag-Installation ceremony) at Broach. "Prabandha Chintamani" mentions Shalivahana as invading King Vikrama's territories about the end of Vikrama's life, (1 to 4 A. D.) and that Vikrama had to make a treaty by virtue whereof Shalivahana became king of Southern Gujarat. The siege of Broach mentioned by Prabhavaka Charitra, if identified with this invasion by Shalivahana, may furnish us with a hint that the InstallationCeremonies may have been then performed. This incident will be about the 56th to 60th year of Padlipta's life and Vikrama's rule. This would lead us to a further inference that after leaving Pataliputra Padlipta was more or less connected with Broach till he was 60. His connection with Aryakhaputacharya may have been one of the reasons of his long connection with Broach. It is probable that he then became acquainted with For Private & Personal Use Only Introduction. 19 www.jainelibrary.org
