________________ Nirvana kalika. 18 Introduction. Arya-Naga-Hasti, the preceptor of Padlipta was the pupil of Arya Nandila & the grand pupil of Arya Mangu. Acoording to Pattavalis Arya Mangu flourished in 467 of Vira Era. They also mention Padlipta as having flourished in or about 470 of Vira Era. It is therefore to be supposed that Arya Mangulo Arya Nandila and Arya-Naga-Hasti must have been of nearly the same age, to make Padlipta, who is fourth in the line, only 3 years later. This is not surprising when it is known that the right to the Patta did not descend from father to son but from preceptor to pupil. The Digambaras state that Naga-Hasti and Arya-Nankshu (probably same as Arya Mangu) were pupils of the same Acharaya named Gunadhara. (Page 160 Introduction to Ratnakarandakashravakachara). 12 If they are the same as Arya-Naga-Hasti and Arya Mangu referred to above, it lends support to the inference that they were practically of the same age. In the ancient times an older Acharya did not consider it below his diginity to learn such subjects as he may not be knowing from even a younger Acharya. There I was thus relation also of Vidya-Guru and Vidya-Shishya and not merely Diksha-Guru and Diksha-Shishya. This is apparent fram the relation of Vajra-Swami with Arya-Rakshita. This is also the reason why in the I list of Yuga-Pradhanas, several Acharyas are mentioned after Arya-Mangu and before Arya-Nandila, although they were not strictly in the line which is of Diksha-Guru and Diksha-Shishya. The dates in the said list of Yuga-Pradhanas are not therefore quite reliable. OSASUSASHAUS Jain Education Inter For Private & Personal Use Only tww.jainelibrary.org
