________________ padas". (Popular Sayings). The plot of Tarangavati is very simple but romantic and impressive. The scene Valtaken is the region between the Ganges and the Yamuna. The story is narrated by the heroine herself who has turned an ascetic in her later life. As in the drama of "Mudra-Rakshasa" of Vishakhadatta, which also I depicts the life of the people of about the same time though dating somewhat later, this novel very graphically describes the life of the people of those ancient times. Painting was an important art and plays an important part in both the works. Memories of previous life described in the work add to its romantic characteristic. The traditional love of the male and female Chakravaka birds furnishes very appropriate back ground al to the romance. The rivers, the groves, caves, temples, and the city on a moonlit night are some of the *important and impressive soences. The freedom of the Indian ladies of the times and the travels of the i merchant class are noteworthy. The robbers as well as hunters have their own code of morality and follow *l certain principles. It is probable that the impressions of the author received in the early life have been ably incorporated by him in the work. It is already mentioned that Padlipta was versed interalia in Nimitta-Pahuda. It appears that he I composed a work on Astrology called Prashna Prakasha. The name indicates that the subject treated must I have been the method of answering questions known as Prashna-Jyotish. The present work Nirvana Kalika Tarangavati and Prashna Prakasha are the three works mentioned by Prabhavaka Charitra as having been composed by Padlipta Suri. Jinaprabhasuri mentions in his “Vividha Tirtha Kalpa" otherwise known as Kalpa Pradipa that Padlipta composed Shantrunjaya Kalpa as well as Revanta Giri Kalpa in praise of CS 3 N. K.
