[नोटः- भारतीय वाड्यय ' का जर्मन भाषामें विस्तृत और परिपूर्ण इतिहास लिखनेवाले प्रसिद्ध जर्मन विद्वान् डॉ. विष्टरनित्स्, जो वर्तमानमें बड्गीय साहित्य सम्राट् कवीन्द्र रवीन्द्रमाय ठाकुर संस्थापित शांतिनिकेतमकी विश्वभारती संस्थाको अपने ज्ञानका दान कर रहे है। उनके पास 'नौतिवाक्यामृत' की १ प्रति अभिप्रायार्थ भेट की गई थी। इस भेटके स्वीकाररूपमें डॉ. महाशयने प्रन्थमालाके मंत्री और इस प्रस्तावनाके लेखक श्रीयुत प्रेमीजीके पास जो एक पत्र भेजा है वह यहाँपर मुद्रित किया जाता है । इससे, सोमदेवसूरिके नीतिवाक्यामृतके बारेमें डॉ. महाशयका कैसा अभिप्राय है वह थोडेमें ज्ञात हो जाता है। इस ग्रन्थके बारेमें, जैसा कि डॉ. महाशयने अपने इस पत्रमें सूचित किया है. विशेष उल्लेख, उन्होंने अपने भारतीय वाध्ययके इतिहासके तीसरे भाग, (जो हालहीमें प्रकाशित हुआ है) पृ० ५०२५-५३० में किया है। -संपादक ।

Dear Sit beg to aoknowbee Saing Granth Literatura
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of one copy of Nitivakyamritam Satikam, published in the Jaina Granthamala. As I have pointed out in the third volume of my 'History of Indian Literature,' the work is of the greatest importance both on account of its contents and especially as the date of its author is well known. Though quoting largely from the Kautilya Arthssastra, Somadeva is yet quite on original writer and treats his subject from a different point of view. The late Jaibacharya Vijaya Dharma Suri had lent me a copy of the old edition of the book which is very rare. I often urged upon him the necessity of a new edition of this important work. I am very glad that the work is now accessible in such a handy and excelent edition, and I am very mucb obliged to you for sending me a copy.
It is a pity that the introduction is not in English or in Sanskrit, as few Europeans read the Vernacular.

माणिकचन्द्र जैन ग्रंथमाला मुंबई. प्रिय महाशय,
आपकी जैन ग्रंथमाळामें प्रकाशितक सटीक नीतिवाक्यामृती पुस्तक मुझे मिली । जैसा कि मैंने अपने 'भार तीय वाध्ययका इतिहास' नामक ग्रन्थके तीसरे भागमें लिखा है, यह ग्रन्थ, अन्दरके विषय और इसके कर्ताके समयकी दृष्टिसे बहुत महत्वका है । यद्यपि कौटिल्यके ग्रन्थका इसमें अनुसरण किया गया है तथापि सोमदेवसूरि स्वतंत्र लेखक हो कर विषय प्रतिपादनकी शैली उनकी निराली ही है। जैनाचार्य विजयधर्मसूरिने इस ग्रन्थकी अत्यंत दुर्लभ्य ऐसी एक प्रति मुझे दी थी और इस महत्त्वके ग्रन्थकी दूसरी आवृत्ति प्रकट करनी चाहिए ऐसा मैंने आग्रह भी उनसे किया था। अब इस प्रन्यकी सुन्दर आकारमें उत्तम रीतीसे प्रकट की हुई इस आवृत्तिको देख कर मुझे आनंद होता है और भापने जो इसकी एक प्रति मुझे भेजी इस लिए मैं आपका बहुत ही उपकृत हूं।
इसकी प्रस्तावना इंग्रेजी या संस्कृतमें नहीं लिखी गई इस लिए मुझे खेद होता है, क्यों कि देशभाषा जानने वाला युरपियन कचित् ही होता है।
