________________ ור וד अनेकान्त 66/4 अक्टूबर-दिसम्बर 2013 There are many causes of dreams and cause and effect theory says where there is cause, there is effect. Dream being an effect have definitely cause behind them. There are nine sources as depicted in illustrated here: 21 49 Out of these nine sources of dreams only deity-projected dreams and dreams due to auspicious and inauspicious karmas are the future predicting dreams. It is also been said that "Anukulapratikulatam devata tannimittami.e. pleased or displeased celestial beings also projects good and bad dreams. 2. Auspicious and Inauspicious in Dreams There is a list of auspicious and inauspicious dreams. In Bhagavati Sutra,23 when Gautama asked Lord Mahâvîra, "How many kinds of dreams are there?" Lord replied, "There are forty two kinds of dreams." "There are thirty great dreams." Altogether there are seventy-two dreams. Out of those seventy-two dreams, the mother of tîrthankara (ford-maker omniscient) visualizes any fourteen dreams. Mother of Cakravarti (sovereign emperors) visualizes fourteen dreams where as mothers of Vâsudeva sees seven dreams, the mother of Baladeva sees four and mother of Mândalika King (A great king under the reign of Cakravarti) sees only one out of the thirty auspicious dreams. The similar illustration is found in Kalpa Sutra2* also as it has given. These are fruitful or auspicious dreams. There is also a mention of inauspicious and fruitless dreams as follows: Day dreaming, very short, very long, old age dreaming agitated mood due to mockery, fear, anger, enthusiasm, guilt, mourning etc. If all these factors are behind the scenes, the dreams are to be counted under the fruitless ones. 3. Dream Hours and Dream Results The mother of Lord Mahâvîra (Triúalâ) saw a series of sixteen dreams when the first three quarters of night (by name Roudra, Râk-hasa and Gândhâra) were past and the 4th quarter (manohara) was almost towards completion (that means just before sunrise) she saw sixteen auspicious dreams in half-asleep-half awakened state, which had the great result yielding tendency. There is also a mention of seventeenth dream25 In this dream, she saw a royal elephant entering her mouth. Almost all the mothers of great sixty three personalities have seen the great dreams almost at the end of night. In Upani-ad it has been said that the dreams, which are seen in the fourth quarter of night, yield results in actuality.
