A meeting of the Jain Gradutes' Association was held at Lalbug near Panjarapole on Monday, the 8th inst at 8-30 a. m. to present an address to a great oriental scholar and translator of Jain scriptures Professor Dr. Harman Jacobi Ph. D. of Bonn University, Germany, who stopped here for a couple of days on his way to the Calcutta University to give lectures on rhetoric The audience consisted of about 1,000 persons including his holiness Muvi Maharaj Shri Vallabh vijay ji and other priests. Dr. Jacobi was greeted with cheers on his arrival in the lecture hall and was offered a chair, while others were sitting on the ground. Pandit Lalan first opened tho proceedings by way of introducing the distinguished guest as a great Scholar of Sanskrit and prakrit, translator of four Jain Sutras and other Jain works such as Upanitibhavaprapanch Katha, Paumachariyam ( composed in S. Y: 56 ) Parishista Parva of Hemachandra etc. and he also stated his invaluable services by way of dispelling false notions as regards Jainism. Mr. Makanji J. Mehta, Bar-at-Law, after a few prelimi. nary remarks read the following address and the same was ited into Gujarati by the Secretary Mr. Mohanlal D. Desai, B.A., L.L,B. for the information of the audience. TO, Prof. Dr. Herman Jacobi, Ph. D. Dear Sir, 1.' It is with feelings of profound gratification that we the members of the Jain Gradutes' Association take this opportunity of offering you our most cordial welcome to this ancient and historic land, the land of Bharat, which is named after the all-victorious Bharat, son of our first Tirthankar Adinath. 2. This land has various and numerous attractions for lovers and students of antiquities, furnishing as it does to them great amount of interest in the many relics of the ancient civilization of this land—relics which still survive and infuso a living interest in this old land of many hopes and numerous promises,
