ARGUMENT AS TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUBTLE STAND POINT.
यदि कार्यमकुवाणोऽपीष्यत तत्तया स चेत् ।
तदा पटेsपि न घटव्यपदेशः किमिष्यते ॥ १८ ॥
(For) If a thing be recognized, even when it does not fulfil its function, then why can the cloth not be called a jar ?
Explanation-For if a thing is not in the state of fulfilling the function, as expressed by the term at the very moment that the expression is made, and still it be recognized as that thing, then why even a jar can be called a cloth, though it is not in the state of fulfilling the function of a cloth. Etymologically Evambhoota means True in its entirety to the word and the sense,' all the qualities denoted by the word being prominent. Samabhiroodha is also true to the word and the sense, but not entirely, some of the qualities being in the back-ground, or not yet realized. Shabda is also true to the word and the sense, but not so true as samabhirudha, more qualities being in the back-ground here. Thus shabda, samabhiroodha and evambhoota are more or less one and the same sort of nayas and so Shree Umaswati Vachaka groups them all in one Samprata, but separately each succeeding naya is purer and of greater importance than the preceding one. 18
INTER-RELATION BETWEEN THE SAID STAND POINTS, THEIR IMPORTANCE AND THEIR DIVISIONS.

These seven stand-points -nayas are as we go down purer (i. e. each succeeding stand-point is purer than the preceding one.) Each one may be subdivided into hundred ones, hence there would be, in all, seven hundred sub-divisions. 19.
