You are, I presume, aware of the Government of India having decided to classify the Jains as a separate body in the census of 1901. They are not included in the Hindoos as they are a community by themselves and named after the religion they follow. As such Jain students appearing in the University examinations ought to be marked " Jains' so that the number of passes may be known to the community. We have lately resolved to provide scholar-ships to Jain students prosecuting higher studies, but in the absence of special classification of Jains we remain in the dark and are put to much inconvenience. I hope you will be good enough to move in the matter and let me know the result. "
