________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Saurastra, a cave of this type is not found so far. But the Caitya-window design does figure in the caves at Talaja and Junagadh and on the temple at Gop. But in finish and elegance of execution of the outline the Caitya-window designs at Uparkot and Gop are much superior to those at Talaja. Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir The Gop-Uparkot Caitya-window form persists in the rest of the pre-Călukyan temples at Visāvāḍa, Bileśvara and Sūtrapādā with hardly any modification. As the form now decorates the sikhara, its number is consequently increased. Two changes are seen in the Caitya-window design in Calukyan temples. The first is the change in its form, the second is the increased decorative use of it. Both these new features are fully exhibited in the old temple at Thyan. The pyramidal crowning of niched figures with Caitya-window deisgns is a characteristic features of Calukyan temples without any exception. Besides this use, the Caitya-window was made to decorate other part of the temple as well. As a rule it is found on the basement mouldings above the Aśvathara (horse-course), on the projecting course between the wall of the base and wall of the shrine. Between the roof and shrine-wall arranged in tiers in the form of a pyramid over niched-figures and lastly over the entire face of the sikhara. Departure from this exhaustive exhibition of Caitya-window designs at Sunak is noticed in the Jain temples at Taranga and Sarotra, where only the niched figures on walls are ornamented with this design. (ii) Goemetric designs The caves and pre-Cālukyan temples is Sauraṣṭra do not seem to contain such sculptured ceiling.s The Sabha-manḍapa of every Calukyan temple, it appears, had a sculptured ceiling. The surviving evidence shows that it was usually of a geometric pattern; but at times also of a floral or mixed type or one containing human figures. Purely geometric designs are seen in the Sabha-maṇḍapa of the temples at Sūnak, Sandera, Dhinoj and in the Vimal and Tejapala's temple at Abu. ૧૪ Floral and geometric designs are found on ceilings in the porhces of the temples at Gorad and Vaḍanagar. In the former a conventionalised flower is placed inside a square; in the latter stylised floral deign is cut out in very bold relief inside a parallelogram. The concentric circle design was very popular in early mediaeval temples. It occurs in the contemporary Calukyan temples and the mediaeval temples of the Deccan. A Few modern temples also have it. Gujarati sculptors now-a-days call it 'Kachala' and 'Zummar' (coconut shell and pendant) design. (iii) Floral designs Floral designs comprise leaf and flower, creeper and purely leaf decorations.
