The Rgveda and The Fundamentals of Economics
Dr. Rakesh A. Jani* Dr. Kamlesh P. Joshipura+
Majority of people, who are interested in the subject of Economic generally believe that considerable contemplation and emphasis has been carried out, from 16th century onwards, by the European and American thinkers alone, in this context. Depending on this concept, Adam Smith has been looked upon as the 'Father of Economics, and the norms and principles in this particular area, prescribed and practised by many scholars like Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Fisher, Marshal and Keynes, are being discussed with great respect in schools and colleges today. However, while undertaking an elaborate study of our grand and glorious heritage of Indian Culture crowned with its inexhaustible treasure of the vedic literature, Manu Smrti', ShukraNiti'. 'The Mahabharat' and the literature produced by Kautilya and the like, it becomes apparent that before thousands of years, an elaborate and excellent discussion on the Fundamentals of Economics had been provided in the 'Rgveda'. As a matter of fact, the Rgveda, which happens to be the earliest extant value on Human Culture all through out the world, does contain the fundamentals of the modern Economics !
Under the circumstances, it will not be difficult to realize the utilitarian value or unique significance of what is known as 'Indian Economics.' Population :
Population' - or 'people - is ever reckoned as the first lesson of Economics. The study of Economics, therefore, offers us a study of people's toilsome activities as well as their behaviour or manners. In the Ķgveda, great emphasis is laid on the longevity of people at large. If there be discipline and wisdom in the daily routine activities of any person, such a person will surely live upto the age of 100 years of even more, and will contribute something substantially both for his society and for his nation. People ought to be bold and courageous so that they might be able to protect their properties. To be explicit, society needs such persons who are warriors as well as proficient. Such kind of presentation as envisaged in the Rgveda is considered highly useful even today for the system of economic management - The occupational distribution of people as specified in the Rgveda, is as follows: Champions of Warfare, Cultivators, Merchants and Craftsmen. Means : Factors of Production :
In the modern economics, the next indication is that of 'Means' or factors of * Associate Prof. of Economics, Saurashtra University, Rajkot (Guj.) + Asst. Prof. of Law, Vice-Chancellor of Saurashtra University, Rajkot (Guj.)
