________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir 3 parts), were completed on schedule and these were published in book forms. Though retired, he was still active in his field of research. A glance of his literary achievements and contributions would hold anyone in awe. Diligence, tenacity and stamina for hard work always ran through his veins. He had a facile pen in English, Urdu, Arabic, Persian and Gujarati, too, and contributed articls in all the above languages. His knowledge on the subject is as deep as the ocean. He dedicated his life to the cause of Perso-Arabic Epigraphy and remained an academician throughout. The list of publications that have come out from the pen of Dr.Desai (appended at the end of this paper) stands testimony to his continuous endeavour in the field and display his erudition and depth of knowledge. He remained active despite his advancing age, and unfortunate accidents, he continued to keep himself engaged in academic activities with the verve and vigour of a person, totally dedicated to his profession till death. His books and other publications are widely used by the students and scholars all over the world. My acquaintance with Dr. Desai goes back to the year 1966 when I joined Epigraphy Branch, Nagpur of the Archaeological Survey of India, as Stenographer attached to him, having spent 17 years with him, till his retirement in 1983. I feel proud to have worked with him and intimately moved with him. My association with him remained till his last days. He used to send articles from Ahmedabad for typing, etc., as, according to him, no one else can understand his handwriting and do neat typing. I am not qualified to comment upon his technical writings. But the articles and books that he wrote, dealing with various aspects of the subject, reveal the fact He participated in more than a dozen national and intemational seminars/conferences/symposia, etc. and even till his last days he was being invited to participate in national/international seminars, conferences, etc. But, unfortunately, bad health prevented him from going out of his house. His vision was dimmed after an eye operation, his hearning was somewhat impaired, he was shrunk a little with age, but his mind was perfectly clear, his memory retained its vast strengh, his handwriting was clear and unchanged. He delivered lectures to the students of School of Archaeology (now Institute of Archaeology) on Indo-Muslim Architecture, Numismatics, Arabic & Persian Inscriptions, Calligraphy, etc. Dr.Desai's art of writing includs footnotes, the notes or references or comments are invariably given in the same page unlike giving separately as "Note", "References" at the end. This facilitate the readers to find out the references easily. In an article, prepared by him before death to be published in the Journal of the Khuda Bhaksh Oriental Public Library, Patna, entitled "Some new information about Taqi Auhadi as gleaned ulus hilis – 741S-2410122-7442242, 2003 • 26 For Private and Personal Use Only
