________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir (1987)jointly sponsored by the Government of India and Frence. During the last three decades of his government service, R.S.Bisht has closely studied monuments of various periods and styles located in different states of India especially in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himanchal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat. A thorough study of monuments which he visited, enabled him to chalk-out detailed plans for their conservation, structural repairs and development of their environs. He guided and supervised conservation work of monuments and excavated remains of diverse categorics. In additon to archacological fieldwork and research, R.S.Bisht has been closely associated with museum and exhibition activities. As Director (Projects and Museums), he was responsible for setting up the famous Swatantyrat Sangram Sangrahalaya in Red Fort, New Delhi in 1995. He supervised setting up of many small museums in Punjab and Haryana and extended his expertise for the display work in the museums at Ratnagiri in Orissa and Roper in Punjab. Besides, quite often he has also organized exhibitions on monuments and on the excavated materials from Dholavira and Banawali at different places and sites. During his posting in different States of India as well as a member of various committees on antiquities, he had examined enormous number of antiquities of varying traditions belonging in different times, and materials. As Director of many excavation projects, he dealt with antiquities ranging from the Pre-historic times to medieval periods. Thus, he is among a few archaclogists who have expertise in archaeological remains of different periods of Indian culture and civilization. R. S. Bisht is not only an excellent excavator and field archaeologist, but also a good teacher and an academician. He had been the Director of the Institute of Archacology from 1991 to 1997 and also imparted training to the post-graduate Diploma in Archacology students. He has been a visiting faculty to the Institute of Architecture and planning, New Delhi, to teach ancient town planning and architecture. R. S. Bisht is a Sahityaratna having thorough knowledge of Sanskrit language, grammar and literature. His keen observation in the field during excavation of Harappa culture sites like Sanghol, Banawali and Dholavira and his in-depth knowledge of Sanskrit enabled him to make a critical review of the Rigveda in the light of recent archaeological findings. He is one of the scholars who believe that the Rigvedic account of its people, geography, settlement features, fortified towns, monumental structures, mercantile and maritime trade etc, corresponds well with the available evidences of Harappan civilizaton in many respects. In his recent article 'Harappans and the Rigveda: Points of Convergence', he has discussed in detail many aspects of the two which show close similarity between the two cultures one of which is purely archacological and the other a purely literary one. Dr. Bisht started archaeological reconnaissance of Gujarat in the year 1984 પથિક ♦ ત્રૈમાસિક ~ જુલાઈ-ઑગસ્ટ-સપ્ટેમ્બર, ૨૦૦૩ ૦ ૨૧ For Private and Personal Use Only
