________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir the Microlithic sites in Central Gujarat. A report on the work was prepared and published in the first number of the M.S.University Journal. This quick, original and scholarly production immediately inspired confidence in the University authorities with regard to Subbarao's capacity and he was appointed to the post of Senior Lecturer. He further endeared himself to the University authorities when he got a chance to dig at Akota and Medical College areas of Baroda proper and proved the antiquity of the city to a period before the Christian era. Charity begins at home - this was the policy he had in mind. The results of this work were published in the first monograph entitled "Baroda Through the Ages" under the newly started M.S.University Archaeology series. During the field season of 1952-53 a most ambitious excavation programme at Maheshwar and Navdatoli in Madhya Pradesh was undertaken under the joint auspices of the M.S.University of Baroda and Deccan College, Pune under the leadership of Professor H.D.Sankalia and Dr. B. Subbarao. The main object was to link the known with the unknown and to establish the cultural sequence from the Paleolithic through the Proto-historic Chalcolithic to Early Historic period. H.D. Sankalia, B. Subbarao and S.B. Deo subsequently published the results of the excavations in 1958 in a joint report under the Deccan College Research Institute and the M.S.University publication series No. 1. As a result of this problem oriented research and the zeal with which Subbarao worked, the M.S.University, particularly its then Vice Chancellor, was not only kind enough towards Subbarao but it was alleged, was partial towards him. There was indeed no partiality. The truth was that a sincere, conscientious scholar, cent percent devoted to his work and to do nothing clse in the University was carrying out his assignment. This bore its' due reward viz. timely encouragement. “Had the young plant not been suitably nourished and watered, it would have withered away" was the comment made by Prof. Sankalia for Subbarao and the University which he served. Thus under the stewardship of Smt. Hansaben Mehta and the enlightened University administration, the Department grew up and established its own identity in 1953, being formally separated from History. The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History thus became the third University Department in the country with an active field work program for archaeology besides Deccan College Pune and the department at Allahabad University. Initially the staff consisted of a small team - one Senior Lecturer, one Research Scholar, one Draftsmancum-photographer and one peon. Subbarao's deputation to the Institute of Archaeology of the London University with a travel grant by the British Council under the Commonwealth Universities Interchange Scheme was the most important landmark in his academic pursuit.
