JAINA ANTIQUARY.
[Vol. I
In Siva Purāna it is enjoined that if one thinks the practice of wearing clothes to be not correct, and if he has renunciation, he should leave even the staff and Kaupin; otherwise he may retain these two while entering upon the Asrama known as Sannyāsa." The method of initiation of a saint is prescribed in the said Purāna, and it has been mentioned that the wearing cloth should be laid aside and the desciple should walk naked for more than seven paces, but if he wishes to retain a loin-cloth conforming to the ideas of ordinary householders he may take up a Kaupin and a staff given to him by his Guru. 8 One who has conquered shame should practise nudity, while one who has not attained this stage but suffers from a sense of shame is permitted to wear a cloth or a skin. This alternative, however, has not been accepted as praiseworthy, for it has been mentioned that he is the best of saints and he is the highest of penitents who discırds the staff, loincloth, girdles, etc. 10 In Jābālopanishad, Paramahansa Upanishad, Nāradaparibrājakopanishad, Bhiksukopanishad, Turiātitopanishad, Sannyāsopanishad and Paramahansaparibrājakopanishad we find Param(7) "गृह्णीयाद्दण्डकौपीनायुचितं लोकवर्शने । विरतश्चेन्न गृहणीयाल्लोकवृत्तिविचारणे ॥""
