for the quotient and 0 for the remainder. Hence there is kg. Since the remainder is 0 this time, we shall not have to add unity to the quotient. On dividing 1 by 5, we have the remainder 1. So there is 11. Hence the 13th combination of the Parivartana is v,ksi.
Uddişta. To determine the serial number of a combination, Nemicandra gives the following rule :
“Take unity. Multiply it by the total number of elements in a category beginning from the last one (in the given combination) and subtract from the product the number of elements lying thereia after the given element. Proneed (successively) in the same way througout."
For example, let us find the serial number of the combination isk:Vi. The last element in this combination belongs to the category of v. So the calculation must be begun with that. As directed in the rule, we take 1. As there are 4 elements in the category of o, we multify it by 4 and get 1 x 454. Since there are 3 elements, namely 02, 03, 04, in that category after 01, we subtract 3 from the product and get 4-3=1. Now we shall have to multiply the remainder 1 by 4, since there are 4 elements in the category of k and then subtract from the result 1, since there lies only one element, namely kg. after kg. Thus we get 1x 4–=3. Next we multiply 3 by ő, there being 5 elements in the category of i and then subtract 1, as there is only one element, viz., is, after is. So we have 3x5-1=14. Hence the serial number of the combination isk30, is 14.
To determine the nasta (i.e., the elements of a combination from its serial number) and the uddista (i.e:, the serial number of a combination for its elements), more readily without going through the lengthy processes of calculations described above, Nemioandra gives two short tables. "He says:
“Place 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; 0, 5, 10, 15; 0, 20, 40 and 60 in three rows (of cells) of the three categories of carelessness and find the 'elements and, the serial numbers of combinations in the Prastāra).» 1 Ibid, Gāthā 42.
