________________ 28 JAINA ANTIQUARY. [ Vol. I (2) letters of the alphabet, (3) tychæographic abbreviations of number names or expressions, and (4) special symbols. Again in writing in decimal notation a number chronogram in nominal notation (Vāma samkhyā) or in alphabetic notation (Aksarasankhyā or Darna-samkhayā), baving the place-value, the leftward move (vāmāngati) was followed. Occasionally, however, we meet with instances, especially in the writings of the early Jaina scholars, in which the rightward move (dakşinā-gati) has to be adopted. Nemicandra has employed most of these notations. For instance, the number 197,912,092,999,680,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000, is stated as "विधुणिधिणगणवरविणभणिधिणयणवलद्धिणिधि खरहत्थी। ForAIAETU ATAT..."4 Here the rightward move is followed. But in "TUAÀFata TatqTUTAE TOTUTA EFT"5 = 7905694150, the leftward move has to be adopted. For the alphabetic notation, he has applied the Katapayādi system in its second variant. For example, we find "तललीनमधुगविमलं धमसिलगाविचारभयमेरू । argita FET"6 = 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,356 with the leftward move, and 1 For a compresensive account of the aiphabetic notation see the writer's articl “ Aksara-samkhyā Praņālī," in the Bungiya Sahitya Parvad Patrikā, 1336 B.S., pp. 22–50. 2 Bibhutibhusan Datta, “ Ankānām Vāmato gatih," Bangiya Sahitya Parisad Patrikā, 1337 B.S., pp. 70-80, 3 Bibhutibhusan Datta, " Jaina-sähitye wāma-samkhya," Bangiya Sahitya Parişad Patrikā, 1337 B.S., pp. 28–39. 4 Trilokasāra, Gāthā 21. 5 Ibid, Gāthā 313. 6 Gommața-sära, Jivakānda, Gäthā 158.
