Dutta'. The origin of this school goes to long back. Now, I am quoting some references from Jain Purānas which indicate that the first Tüthankara Lord Rsabhadeva himself taught Number System (Amka Vidyā) to his younger daughter Sundart. We know that he taught script (Lipi Vidya) to his elder daughter Brahmt. । 108॥
In Purana - sara-Saigraha Acarya Damanandi writes that -
One more reference of Adipurana, ch. - 16, indicates the existence of mathematical operations during the period of Lord Rsabhadeva.
।' In the Svetambara tradition of Jaina Dharma we also find many references. It is an established fact that at the time of Candragupta, about 300 B.C., during 12 year famine, Svetambara sect came into picture. In the Svetambara tradition, in connection of 72 arts, we find the quotation -
i.e.Script etc. but full of mathematics. In otherwords we can say that they accept that all the arts are full of mathematics. The technical word used for mathematics in Svetambara tradition is Samkhyana (संख्यान). In Vyakhyaprajnapti (Bhagavati Sutra) knowledge of Samkhyāna is essential for all the Jaina Monks (Sadhus). In the lane of twelve amgas, third one is Sthānānga, which is also known as Thānam and preserved in the Svetāmbara tradition. We find an important verse (No. 747) related to the topics of Samkhyāna.
Types of Samkhyāna are 10, which are following -
