Introduction The concept of culture has been defined and employed in different ways and there is a general acceptance that culture is a system of leamed behaviour acquired by a person as a member of society. Culture is shared when a group of people accept and organize their lives according to it. Cultural systems usually pass from generation to generation through a process of leaming Thus culturos vary from group to group and make members of the same group similar to each other & members of different groups different. As Benderly (1977) nightly pointed out that every person spends a substantial portion of his lite, leaming a share of his culture,
Cultural identity refers to the identification of a person or a group of people with a specilio social or cultural tradition. The sense of the self conception, leamed in common, by a group of people is called cultural identity. The process of cultural Identification varies when a group of people adopt themselves to their new natural and social environment. Forde (1934 . 463) adds that culture intervenes as a middle term between the physical environment and human activity
Koraputa forms the southern part of Orissa. The southern boundary of this area is demarcated by river Patal, known down stream as Macakunda and later as Silfru. The western boundary with Madhya Pradesh is roughly demarcated by river Jannāra for some time and by river Kolāba which takes the name Savari during its southward course. River Kolaba is the main river of Korāpūta. Alongwith the river basin, at different places, habitations and kingdoms have been established. These areas have been inhabitated by different tribes viz - Khonda, Gadvā, Parājā, Bonda, Didayi, Bhumiyā, Amanatyā, Gaunda and Koya.
The Godvās and the Parājās seem to have migrated to these areas in the beginning of the second century A.D. An image of Jaina Yakshini of the Kusāna period found at Anandapur in Keonjhar District of Orissa depicts * N-14, Chetakpuri, Gwalior -474009 (M.P.)
