Do we take a moment in our busy lives to give respect and impart gratitude to our Guru on the day of Guru Purnima? Our relationship with mother, father, soulmate is a relation that is gifted to us in just this life. But the relationship with our Guru is a soul to soul relationship which is carry forwarded with a soul in all its births. It is a very sacred relationship that reconstructs your soul and points it through the path of freedom, serenity, and wisdom. It is a leap of faith that a disciple beholds within his soul towards his Guru that is destined and he eventually masters the erudition his Guru exemplifies. I believe the prominence of a Guru is far beyond words and cannot be humanly described. It is a spiritual aura that one encounters and cannot be explained. Looking back at the history, the oldest tradition of Guru as stated in Vedic scriptures comes from Hinduism with its ancestries in early Upanishadic times. In India, by the 1st Millennium BCE, there exist Gurukul (school) which comprised of Guru's (teachers) who enabled teachings of Vedas and Upanishads - the text of Hindu Philosophy and post Vedic Shastras embracing spiritual knowledge and various arts. In olden days, the term Guru was addressed to different types of teachers. Substantially there were different categories of Gurus. To name few such as Acharya, Sramana, Vatsana, Tapasa, and much more. Although there were many types of teachers spiritual or worldly, the general term to address a teacher was "Guru". In the Vedic period, a Guru was given paramount significance by his disciple, as a Guru was the one who would be responsible for guiding a disciple through his life and nurturing right moral ૧૨૮ values of life. To subdue Brahma Vidya- the utmost knowledge, a Guru was the only source and hence for a disciple, his Guru would be in his close veneration. Besides discerning Guru as a teacher, Guru also identifies to an entity who leads you to the path of spiritual upliftment and moksha. As a result, Guru worship as God, belief of Guru as an incarnation of God, Guru as an envoi of God became a strong credence and praxis in different cults of religion. In different sects of Hinduism, the veneration of worshiping Guru as human God became a convincing ritual and tradition since according to Hindu philosophy Moksha can be attained only through a Guru. As per Tantric and Yoga structure of Hinduism, Guru signifies a supreme and divine position. The Guptasadhana Tantra, for instance, avows that Guru is a combination of all gods-Brahma, Vishnu & Maheshwara. As per Hindu Dattatreya Sampradaya, a Guru is an incarnation of God and he disembarks on earth for the upliftment of devotees. Although, Guru tradition follows in every Indian religion. In Sikhism, Guru tradition evolved ever since the religion was founded in 1469 by Guru Nanak. As per Sikhism, the word Guru signifies to Guru Nanak and his nine-spiritual enlightener whom Sikh sect worship as Guru. Guru is the pedigree of celestial guidance to humankind stipulated through ten Enlightened Masters. Although, Sikh philosophy does not illustrate that Guru is an incarnation or Avatar of God. But they trust that it is through Guru, that God transmitted the message to the devotee and inculcates humankind.
