* Africa. Kallenbach a German engineer was highly
impressed whenever he came in acquaintance with & M.K.Gandhi at a vegetarian restaurant in South
Africa. It didn't take long for these two vibrant personals to become friends. Both of them believed and opted for a simple life and serve their life and soul to their fellow actuality. During Kallenbach and Gandhi's fellowship, Gandhi was writhing for the rights of Indians and Africans on a white men dominated land. And for the same, the only formula of confrontation Gandhiji used was something fascinating and that was "Satyagraha",i.e. not accepting what was delivered by white men. This non-violent act of Gandhiji used a very simple strategy. It would reach out to white men in an actual straight form by not following their laws that Gandhiji considered evil. Kallenbach was spellbound by this proceeds of Gandhiji and they both worked together henceforth. Not to be surprised, but only divine soul
like this Engineer and lawyer would consider The themselves likewise to every other individual born
on this earth. They were never taken aback by their profession but considered themselves equal to any other common man including a cobbler or a scavenger. They never considered any work below their dignity such that they also cleaned the toilets and learnt how to make footwear from a cobbler. This strong credence and bond between Kallenbach and Gandhiji was a soul to soul connection. No wonder this ambience of Kallenbach with Gandhiji
made him Gandhi's white brother. They both e believed and practiced three principles in life.
One-"the good on individual is in the good of all" Second - "work is noble and all are equal" and Third - "a life of labour is worth living"
The time was not far, when Kallenbach became like a family member to Gandhi's family. Kallenbach was like uncle to Gandhi's three children, although, believing and practicing the principles of simplicity and equality, Gandhiji wouldn't let Kallenbach buy expensive toys for his children as that might bring them a difference from poor people around them. And under no circumstances Gandhiji wanted his children to feel superior. In 1910, this German white brother of Gandhiji, who was a rich man, gifted his
thousand acre farm to Gandhiji which was located E near Johannesburg. This farm led to Gandhi's

famous 'Tolstoy Farm' that became a house to the families of satyagrahis. During the times when Gandhi would be imprisoned because of his Satyagrahi acts, Kallenbach would take care of editing Indian opinion - a weekly newsletter started by Gandhi. This was an added advantage to Gandhi's operations, as being white, Kallenbach would not be punished as per the South African laws.
Kallenbach became a part and parcel of almost every activities initiated by Gandhi. When Gandhi started Phenix Ashram near Durban, Kallenbach without any hesitation joined this new life at Ashram. He gladly built sheds for the inmates' workings as a carpenter with all his choice out of joy and happiness. Such were his principles of excellence.
Gandhi returned to India in 1915. That's when E First World War struck between England and Germany. During this time, when Kallenbach's soul called to visit Gandhi in India, he was heartbroken. Being German, he was refused to enter India. He was in distraught and had no choice but to return back to South Africa. But that didn't stop him from following his principles of life and operations initiated by Gandhi in South Africa. He continued his work as a Satyagrahi.
This white brother had to meet Gandhi one day. His love and devotion to Gandhiji had to win and was destined to meet his soul-mate. That day was not long. In 1936, Kallenbach did visit India and met Gandhi at his Ashram at Sevagram near Wardha. At this time, though he fell sick, Gandhi's love and care nursed him back. Gandhi himself took Kallenbach's personal care and cured him completely of his sickness. In 1938, Kallenbach's journey of life was looming to culmination. He eventually took a final take off to his heavenly abode and Gandhi undeniably lost his younger brother!!
Gandhiji connected to all his disciples charismatically through his soul and empathy. Being miles away, people felt he resided in their heart and felt Gandhi within themselves. These partisans followed Gandhi's footsteps with selfless motives to Gandhi's duty towards humanity, to his revolution, his non-violent fight for righteousness for his universal family! 49,wood ave, Edison, N.J-08820 U.S.A.
