The establishment of the Jain Samaj in 1988 was a historic moment for Jainism, as it constituted the first centre of its kind in Europe. I pay tribute to the work which the Samaj has done since its inception in promoting the values of tolerance and non-violence.

Although the Jain community in Leicester is relatively small in numbers, the Jains have made an outstanding contribution to the life of the City in the last ten years.
Not only has the community transformed a derelict building into a marvel of grace and beauty right in the heart of the City, but they have co-operated with educationalists to inform literally thousands of people in the profound wisdom of
Jainism.
In this decade the Jain Samaj has become a fixed point of Leicester life, sparking academic interest in Jainism as well as being living proof of the multi-cultural life of the City.

As the name implies, the Samaj has brought many visitors from overseas to our City and the Samaj leadership have played a valuable role in developing multi faith understanding.
