Dhyānayoga" is one of the types of Yoga consisting of the meditation of mind, speech and body. Bhāvanāyoga' is accorded prime importance in canons for purity of the soul. The soul purified by meditating on those reflections is compared to a ship in water, like a ship reaching the shore he gets beyond misery. The four Bhāvanās maitri, pramoda, kārunya and mādhyasthya are essential part of Bhāvanāyoga. The two auspicious meditations Dharma and Sukla also have four Bhāvanās each. For safeguarding the five great vows five Bhāvanās have been prescribed for each. For the purity of conduct the practice of Adhyātmayoga being essential an aspirant is instructed time and again to be engrossed in Adhyātmayoga. Samatāyoga: canonical texts maintain that an absence of attachment and aversion in friend or foe, jewel or stone, gold or soil is the state of equanimity33 Coming to the four types of meditation-Artta, Raudra, Dharma and Sukla, none of these is mentioned explicitly in Ācārānga I and Sūtrakstānga I, considered to be the earliest of the
