________________ Concept of Śila in Jainism : 113 (ii) Apratilekhita-sthandila (failure to examine the place of excretion) (iii) Apramārjita-sayyā (failure to sweep the sleeping-place) (iv) Apramārjita-sthandila (failure to examine the place of excretion) (v) Samyag-ananupālana (improper general performance of the fast) 4. Vow of sharing with deserving Guests (Atithi-samvibhāgavrata) The word atithi (guest) has in fact been specialized by the Jains to signify a sādhu on his alms-round and is explained to mean 'one who has no tithi'(fixed date). To offer necessities of life (food, medicines, etc.) to the monks who live on begging alms, as also to the benevolent noble persons engaged in the service of the people is the meaning of this present vow. The vow also means to give proper help to the miserables and poor. Sometimes the term atithisamvibhāga also indicates the physical services rendered by laymen or monks to other monks in need. Some ācāryas employ the simple expression dāna for this term. The aticāras of atithi-samvibhāgavrata are as follows: (i) Sacitta-nikṣepa (depositing alms on sentient things) depositing foods on the ground, on water or plant leaves with the intention of avoiding alms giving. (ii) Sacitta-pidhāna (covering alms with sentient things) covering alms with fruit, leaves, flowers with the same intention as stated above. (iii) Kālātikrama (transgressing the appointed time)- giving alms when the time has passed for the monks to eat or the time has not yet come. (iv) Paravyapadeša (pretending that alms belongs to others) offering some other person's alms as if it were one's own.
