advices persons to be involved in fare activities, which could benefit the society. Thus to give advice to others about wrong activities, to give vein and needless advice, to give such type of advice which could stimulate others to be involved in perverse sensual pleasure or to give advice for wrong method livelihood are purposeless and
harmful activities. (v) Duḥ-śruti (Faulty reading)- It is listening to, reciting,
or expounding evil stories through which passion and
injuries or provoked. The aticāras of this vrata are as follows: (i) Kandarpa (libidinous speech)- Siddhasena defines it
as language which is provoked by the lust accompanied by movement of the mouth, eye, eye-brows, lips to
arouse laughter.28 (ii) Kautkucya (Buffoonery)- It is spasmodic contractions
of the eye, eyebrows, nose, lips, hand while making
various sorts of funny movements.29 (iii) Maukharya (Speaking purposelessly)-Siddhasena Gani
holds this to be speech that is vulgar, nonsensical and
impertinent.30 (iv) Samyuktādhikaraṇa (Bringing together harmful
implements)- It is keeping together of two objects which could lead one to an evil fate. Typical examples of such linked adhikaraņas are pestle and mortar, cart and yoke,
bow and arrows. (v) Upabhoga-paribhogātireka (Superfluity of luxuries)
Siddhasena Gaņi opines that bathing and use of ornaments as well as the consumption of food and drink must be on moderate scale according to one's need or accumulation of the objects of upabhoga and paribhoga beyond the need of one's need. 31
