________________ Concept of Śila in Jainism : 101 (iii) Ananga-kriḍā (love-play) -use of artificial phalli made of wood, leather etc. (iv) Para-vivāha-karaṇa (match-making)-marrying of one's own children (v) Kama-bhogativrābhilāṣā (excessive predilection for the pleasure of the senses) 5. Aparigraha or abstinence from hoarding unnecessary possessions (Sthūla parigraha-viramaṇa) The final Anuvrata is that of aparigraha or non-possession. The Jaina scriptures often define parigraha as the delusion (mürcchā) of possession. On account of endless desire of possession, we become slaves of our possessions. The principle of aparigraha teaches us to restrict our possessions to the minimum. The Jaina scriptures condemn holding the external and internal both types of possessions. External possessions are ten- land, house, silver, gold, livestock, grain, maidservants, menservants, clothing, and miscellaneous goods as furniture and so on. The attachment and delusion of these things is internal possession. Jaina literature gives a list of fourteen internal and ten external possessions. To weaken the internal possession, which is of the nature of defilement, it is necessary to limit properly the external possessions. If a man has burning desire to collect much wealth so that he can indulge in the enjoyment of worldly pleasure, he has great possession even if his penniless. Excessive accumulation of riches is a sin and to have such a desire is a sin of equal measure. So if a person does not set limits to his possession, then greed and desire press him to involve himself into all those vicious activities necessary for accumulating possessions, which defile the soul. Therefore, one has to limit his possessions. The commentators mention following five aticāras of this vow: (i) Yojanena-kṣetra-vastu-pramāṇātikrama (Exceeding the limits set for land and houses by incorporation) (ii) Pradanena-hiraṇya-suvarṇa-pramāṇātikrama (Exceeding the limits set for gold and silver by donation) Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
