4. Para Dayā (Kindness towards other beings) - To increase the percentage of pleasure and to decrease the percentage of pain of other beings are known as Paradayā. So a kind man always tries to save other beings from their sufferings and to provide them pleasures as much as he can. Dāna (Charity)
Dāna has been defined by Umāsvāti as “Anugrahārtha svasyāti sargo dānam Il”?!?
Charity (Anugraha) is to offer one's own thing to some person to help or to favour him. Pt. Sukhalālají has analysed the theory of charity established by Umāsvāti. In his opinion, dāna is the offer of that thing which has been earned justly. The offer must be proved beneficial to both the person who is offering and the person to whom the offer is made. The person who gives charity to some needy fellow is benefitted by being free from the attachment to the thing given and the man who gets charity is benefitted by the fulfillment of his needs. Parts and Characteristics of Charity -
There are four parts of charity, that present its four characteristics."
(i) Method of charity (Vidhi) - The method of charity introduces its methodical characteristic. When, with a view to justifying the space (Deśa), time (Kāla) and faith (Sraddhā), a thing is offered and it does not affect in any way the theory of the person who is receiving the charity, it is categorised as methodical characteristic.
(ii) Matter or object of charity (Vastu) - The matter or thing which is being given as charity must have the qualities which may give support and cause improvement of that person who is getting charity.
(iii) Generous Person (Dātā) - The generous person should have respect in his heart for the person to whom he is offering something. After giving charity neither he should have any gloom in his heart nor any desire for getting some gain or return.
(iv) Man who gets charity (Pātra) - The man who is considered suitable for taking charity must have right faith (Samyaka Darśana), right
