We live in a time when people, especially young people in their formative years are constantly being pulled in all directions. In such circumstances, a lot of them end up being confused and disoriented. Often they have great difficulty in choosing a path. They lack and awareness of who they are and what they believe. With the family and cultural values eroding fast, they face an uphill task. Adults often do not support their efforts to be themselves.
The future of our community lies with the youth. Their future depends on their families, education, environment and the socio economic situation - in other words, the influences that they are exposed to as they grow-up through their formative years. All these can have a profound affect on their development of their sense of identity, personality beliefs and values - in short their “samskāra".
Jainism is one of the oldest living religions of the world. It has a rich spiritual, cultural and literary heritage to its credit. Jainism has served the humanity in more ways than simply being a religion followed by few. It has shown a holistic approach to how life should be lived. It has strongly espoused the basic principles of humanity and given a much deeper meaning to live and let live. Whereas other religions limit the practice to human beings, Jainism has encompassed every living form.
The principles of non-violence, non-possessiveness and anekāntavād - meaning that truth can be multi-dimensional - are some of the basic tenets of Jainism. Thus, Jainism can prove to be a boon to mankind. Jainism can contribute much towards solving the problems faced by the youth and the world alike in the 21st century.
Keeping this in view, and with a view to bring forth fresh ideas, Parshwanath Vidyapeeth and Harjas Rai Jain Public Charitable Trust, Delhi sponsored an all India Essay Competition as part of their
