________________ १६१ will also achieve salvation during the same time. 38. Jaina Texts mention that Srikrsna remained in the world for one thousand years while Vedic Texts are of view that he was alive for 120 years 39. Jaina Texts say that Balarāma had been roaming with holding the corps of Śřikrsna for six months. Siddhārtha Deva tried to pacify his attachment and finally Balarāma kept him into fire. Then he kept himself busied in performing the Jaina penance and took the birth in Brahmaloka. 40. According to Jaina tradition Śrikrsna is not an incorn ation of Lord Visņu. He was a human being like us except that he had some peculiar qualities which are not found in general. 41. As regards the Hindi Jaina literature, that too follows the earlier Jaina tradition. In Vedic tradition, Lord Krişna is described as Gopijana-- Vallabha, Rasika and an incornated personality while Jaina tradition is of view that he was of course, a Great man but not an incornation of God. Pāndu, penitent over his killing of a deer, renounces the world and became a Jaina monk. Dhịtarāştra too after hearing a prophecy about the destruction of his entire family, renounces the world and becomes a Jaina monk. 62 43. Unlike Mahābhārata, Jaina writers reduce Kļşņa to human stature by showing his nature to be scheming and selfish. It is said that at the time of Nemi's marriage, Krsna had gathered animals to be slaughtered for the marriage feast in order to eliminate Nemi as a rival to the kingdom by provoking him to renunciation.63 44. Unlike Mahābhārata, Sāntanu himself is said to have fathered Matsyagandhā.64 45. Bhîşma not only took a vow to renounce all rights to his kingdom, but also cut of his own genitals and thus earned his Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
