halls should have a height of 12 times the height of men with a stagesize of 32 dancers' show. The meeting halls should have 1 :b:h ratio of 1.5 : 1:0.3, i.e. they should have a larger length then width or 1:1:0.25. Their doors should have 1:1:2 1-b-h ratio. The sports centres are halls with 1:1: 2 ratio suggesting a predominance of indoor games. The water reservoirs should be in the ratio of 1 : 2 :0.2 in length, width and depth. It has been stated that any city should have mountain on one side and river on the other side for security reasons in those days.
The royal palaces or richmens' buildings have been detailed well in contrast to common houses. The palaces should have (i) balconies, (ii) servants quarters, (iii) dressing rooms, (iv) prayer halls, (v) small large temple, (vi) amorous sports hall, (vii) delivery rooms, (viii) recreation rooms, (ix) sorts room and (x) park & plantation areas. In fact, the palaces are miniature cities within towns. The dimensional ratios and details are similar to the towns except that they are srnaller in size in comparison. The individual buildings have a ratio of 2:1 :3(1 :0.5 : 1.5/0.75) in terms of length, width and height depending on the shape and size of the buildings. The doors of the houses should have a ratio 1:1:1.5 - 2.8 The colours of houses are attractive but variable. Recently, the Jaina architect texts are found to mention 16324 types of houses with 60' x 70', 48' x 54', 42' x 40', 36' x 42', 30' x 36' and 24' x 90' sizes for people of different castes. Different types of army-residences are also described under seventy two arts.
Temple Architecture
The shapes and sizes of Jaina temples (whether in towns or palaces) differ in dimensional details. Some simple formulae (i-iv) relating to their length, width and height, have been given in Jambudvipa Prajnapti" as below :
(i) 1/2 = b (ii) 2h - 50 = 1 (iii) (1+b)/2 + h (iv) (1+b)/h + foundation
In general, the temples are said to have 1 :b:h:: 1:0.5 : 0.75. The description of temples suggests that it has many parts inside and outside so as to have a natural and picturesque surroundings. The temple actual consists of (i) three doors (1 : 1:2), (ii) Sanctum
