ever, Pt. Nathuram Premi} categorically denied the existence of any such sect. This epigraph, according to him, belonged to pre-division period of Sargha. In fact, in opposition to the holding of piece of cloth by Aryakrsna, Yāpaniyas or Boţikas attempted to take recourse to Acelaka tradition. In the course of time, hostility to the changes in Jaina Sangha, led to the origin of Yāpanīya or Botikas as schism
Both literary and epigraphic evidences confirm that though Mahāvīras religious order was divided into ganas etc. yet not clearly into Svetāmbara, Digambara and Yăpanīya sects as such, upto thirdfourth century. Therefore, Jaina sects: namely, Svetămbara, Digambara and Yāpanīya might have originated during 4th-5th century A.D., even though, the roots of dissension have striked deeply, prior to this date.
However, the term Bodiya, for the first time figured in Avaśyaka Mülabhāsya?, according to which the tradition of Boţikas originated in Rathavīrapur, in a garden in 609 V. N. S. by Sivabhūti, a desciple of Ajjakanha. The date of composition of Āvaśyaka Mūlabhāșya is, between Āvaśyaka Niryukti and Višeşāvaśyaka Bhāşya. Referring to the events of 584 V. N. S., i. e., Ist century A. D., Āvašyaka Niryukti" was naturally composed at a latter date. Višeșāvaśyaka Bhāşya?4 is generally ascribed to the closing of 6th century A. D. Thus, the Botika or Yapaniya came into existence between Ist and 6th century A. D. and the date of the dispute about clothes mentioned in Āvašyaka Mūlabhāsya as V. N. S. 609, may be taken to be true. Here we must be aware of the fact that actual division did not take place at the time of Sivabhūti, i. e., V. N. S. 609, but certainly at a later date, at the time of Kodinna and Kottavīra, as Āvasyaka Mūlabhāsya mentions.35
Except Darśanasāra of Devasena36 ( 942 A. D. or 999 V. S.), no other work of Digambara tradition, deals with this division of Jaina religious order. According to it, Svetămbara sect, originated 136 years after Vikrama's demise at Valabhi of Saurastra. It also informed that Yāpanīya Sangha was founded by Svetāmbara monk Śrīkalaśa in Vikram Samvat 205, in Kalyāna.Darśanasāra is posterior to Avašyaka Mülabhāsya, hence, its facts should be scrutinised carefully. However, both Avasvaka Mülabhāsva and Darśanasāra mention V. S. 136 (V. N. S. 606 ) and V. S. 139 ( V. N. S. 609 ) respectively, as dates of the division of the Sarigha. Both corroborating each other, it can not be ruled out entirely, as unauthentic. But it indicates only that the disputation in
Jaina Sarigha, started by the beginning of the second century. Darśanasāra Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only
