________________ १०८ : अमण/अक्टूबर-दिसम्बर/१९९५ Here the chin of the child ( Hanumāna ) does not get damaged by the powerful blow of Indra's 'Vajra, 12 the unfailing weapon. In Padmapurāņa, the infant wistfully jumps out of his mother's lap, while she is proceeding to step into her maternal uncle-Pratisūrya's 'Vimāna' to leave for his abode ( 17/345-348, 379-386) दृष्ट्वासौ पृथुको मातुरात कौतुकसस्मितः। उत्पत्य प्रविविक्षुः सत्रपप्तदिगरिगह्वरे।। (Ibid, 386) The hillock; on which the babe falls, splinters into small pieces, but he himself escapes unhurt ततः सहस्रशः खण्डैनीतायां सुमहास्वनम्। शिलायां पातवेगेन ददर्शवं सुखस्थितम्।। ( 17/391) As the chap had broken the hillock into pieces, the astonished Pratisūrya and other Vidyadharas sing prayer in his praise as 'Srisaila चूर्णितश्च ततः शैलस्तेनासौ पतनात्तदा। . श्रीशैल इति तेनासावस्माभिर्विस्मितैः स्तुतः।। ( 18/122 ) As the ceremonial-rites of his birth are performed in the city, named 'Hanuruha' ( Pratisurya's capital), the child comes to be known as 'Hanumana' पुरे हनूरुहे यस्माज्जातः संस्कारमाप्तवान्। हनूमानिति तेनागात्प्रसिद्धिं स महीतले।। ( 17/403 ) In Padmapurana, unlike the story of the 'Ramayana' or 'Ramacaritamānasa', Hanumāna is not a counsellor living under the dominion of Sugriva, the monkey-king. He is, indeed, the ruler of an independent Island, named 'Sripura' ( 49/1-3 ). When needed, Sugriva sends for him quite respectfully and solicits his favour पवनञ्जयराजस्य श्रीशैल: प्रथितः सुतः। विद्यासत्त्वप्रतापाढ्यो बलोत्तुङ्गः स याच्यताम्।। प्रतिपनैस्ततः सवैरेवमस्त्विति सादरैः । मारुतेरन्तिकं दूतः श्रीभूतिः प्रहितो द्रुतम्।। ( 48/247, 249 ) He leaves for Kişkindha looking quite resplendant and accompanied by his attendants & associates -- Jain Education International www.jainelibrary.org For Private & Personal Use Only
