________________ Kalpasūtra. Both appear to be the same kula though there appears to be a little difference in the Sakhās of these kulas. The thāniya kula of the epigraphic record has Aryyaveri (Arya-vajrī) and the Sthāniya kula has Vaira-śākhā of the Kalpasūtra. The two other Sākhās-Uchchanāgari and Madhyamika are also to be found in the inscriptions. The names of the Śākhās associated with Vachchaliya kula is mutilated in that record where it is found. Possibly it was the Vidya-dhari Sākhā of the Kalpa Sutra as the three other Śākhās are already associated with the three other kulas of the Kottiya gana in the Kuṣaṇa inscriptions. The next gana or school in order is Vāraṇa which is identified by Buhler with Carana gana of the Kalpa Sutra. Its existence along with a number of kulas and Sākhā in the Kuṣāņa period is testified to by the Brahmi records of the Jains unearthed at Mathura. Only some important epigraphic records of the gana may be considered for enumerating its different kulas and Sākhās. The following important epigraphic records which enumerate the names of kulas and Śākhās in this gana may be taken into consideration. An inscription' incised on the pedestal of a Jain statue records the gift by the cherished daughter of Grahahathi at the request of Gahaprakiva pupil of the venerable Data a ganin in the Vārana gana and the Pusyamitrīya (Pushyamitriya) kula, in honour of the Arhat. The inscription is dated in the year 29 of the great king.....shka. There is another inscription1o dated in the year 44 of the great king Huvishka recording a dedication at the request of the venerable Nagaseṇa the pupil of Haginamd, a preacher (Vācaka) in the Vāraṇa, in the Aryyacetiya kula (Arya-Chețika) in the Harītamālakaḍhi (Harītmālagaḍhi) Śākhā It is dated in the year 44. The inscription" on the base of a seated Jain records the dedication from the Vārana gana and from the Petivāmika kula. An inscription12 discovered by Dr. Fuhrer mentions Kaniyasika kula in the Vārana gana. The name of the Sākhā is mutilated though the first two letters 'od' are apparent. Another kula Aya-Hāṭṭiya (Arya-Haliya) of the Varaṇa gana is mentioned in an inscriptions13 found on the base of a seated Jina statue. The Vajanagari Sākhā (Vārjanagari) and Ārya-Śirikiya Sambhoga are also mentioned. This kula is also mentioned in an inscriptions1 dated in the year 4. तुलसी प्रज्ञा जुलाई - दिसम्बर, 2004 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only 103 www.jainelibrary.org
