________________ Preksha Dhyana A Unique System of Meditation J.S. Zaveri *To see is the literal and simple translation of the term "Prekshaol. Now if we look for the meaning of the word "see" in a dictionary we find that it has many aspects, viz : "See :- exercise power of discerning objects with eyes; perceive objects by the sight; perceive mentally; ascertain by inspection, experiment, consideration etc.; See through :-penetrate; see real character of; through disguise or false appearance; continue to watch or take care of until the end or until difficulties are overcome, etc. etc." Each of the above aspects has its own significance and the integrated interpretation gives us an idea of the process of seeing. “Preksha" is thus a process of ascertaining and knowing the TRUTH and the important steps in the process are : Observation, inspection, experimentation, consideration and judgement. It is not only "seeing" but "seeing through" which connotes deep penetration to ascertain the real character after rejecting t false appearance or disguise. The term “Dhyana" (meditation) is usually defined as the concentration of thinking on a particular object for a length of time. Now, the mind is the instrument of thinking as well as of perception, and therefore, when linked with "Preksha", "Dhyana” becomes concentration of perception and not of thought. It is conceded that both thinking (conception) and seeing (perception) can assist us in ascertaining and knowing the truth. However, the latter is not only a more powerful instrument than the former but also more practicable. This 1. “Preksha" is derived from the Sanskrit word “Pra+Iksha" which means to observe carefully. 2.
