Soper suggested that such āyāgapaļas as the one shown in Figure 1 could be considered a more primitive form of what would later evolve into the great Buddhist mandalas. 12 Referring to what may appear to be a two-dimensional design in such painted mandalas, Stella Kramrisch pointed out that they must be interpreted as three-dimensional forms. 13
