________________ Figure 3: Semi-cylindrical field occupied by a bee/ The word, vikkhambha ( = Skt. viskambha), is usually used in the sense not of 'a circumference' but of 'a diameter' of a circle, but Utpala cites a Sanskrit verse that uses the word, viskambha, in the former sense in his commentary (p. 600, AD 976) on the Brhatsaṁhitā of Varāhamihira. It is interesting that the verse too prescribes formulas for the circumference and the area of a circle with 3 for a. A centipede (gomhi): Approximation by a rectangular solid. gomhiāyāmo ussedhajoyanatiņnicaübbhāgo tadathabhāgo vikkhambho vikkhambhaddham bāhallam ede tinn vi puroppuram guņide ussedhajovanaghaṇassa saṁkhejjadibhāgo āgacchadi | The length (a) of a centipede is three fourths of an ussedha-joyaņa, the width (b) an eighth of it, and the thickness (h) half of the width. When all these three (quantities) are multipleid mutually, a countablenumber-th part of a cubic ussedha-joyana is obtained (lit. comes).
