________________ AN EXTRACT FROM "HISTORY OF HINDU CHEMISTRY' By Frifulla Chandra Chandra Ray D.se., Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, Presidency, College, CALCUTTA Vol. II. PAGE 178 TO 183. The atomic theory of the Jainas:-Of the nine catagories of the Jainas, that of Ajive (the not soul or non-Ego) consists of fivo entities, four of which are emmateriol (ara), Viz, Merit, demerit, space and time, aud the fifth, material (), possessing of figure). The last is called Pudgala (matter), and this alone is the vehicle of energy, which is essentially kinetic, i. e. of the nature of motion. Every thing in the world of not-soul (the non-Ego) is either an entity (5), or a change of state in an entity (a), Pudgala (matter) and its changes of state ( पर्याय ) whether of the natnre of subtile motion ( परिस्पन्द ) or of Evolution (afton), must furnish the Physical as opposed to the Metaphysical basis of all our explanations of nature. Pudgala (matter) exists in two formus,--Anu (atom) aud Skandha (aggregate). The Jainas begin with an absolutely homogeneous mass of Pudgalas, which, by differentiation (a) breaks up into several kinds of atoms qualitatively determined, and by differentiation, integration, and differentiation in the integrated (agarą, Mia Amazig— Umasvati, Chap, V, Sutra 26 ), formis aggregates (Skandhas). An Anu has no parts, no beginning, middle or end. An Anu is not only infinitestimal, but also eternal and ul. timate. A Skandha way vary from a binary aggregate (u) to an infinituur (arazarga). A binary Skandha is an aggregate of two Anus (atoms), a tertiary Skandha is formed by the addition of an atom ( Anu) to the binary () and so on Ad Infinitum. The asceuding grades are (1) what can be numbered (eicầu), (2) indifinitely large (aszäu). (3) infinity of the first order (a), (4) infinity of the second order (afataza), and so on.
