[ વર્ષ ૧૫ મારીઓથી પ્રજા ત્રાસી ગઈ. વૈશાલોને ચમત્કારિક સ્તૂપ ગાદી નાંખવારૂપ ઘેલછા જનતામાં જન્મી. અમેઘ બાણાવળી ચેડા મહારાજાના હાથ હેઠા પડયા. કુષિકે ધર્મમિષથી વૈશાલીની પ્રજાને છેતરી અને ગણરાજયને એ રીતે અંત આણ્યો. “વૈશાલી ની મહત્તા એતિહાસિક દૃષ્ટિએ જેમ ઓછી નથી; તેમ ધાર્મિક નજરે પણ એમાં ઓછ૫ નથી. વૈશાલીમાં જૈનધર્મ કેન્દ્ર સ્થાને હતો, એ સિહ છે. ઉત્તર હિંદુસ્તાનમાં જૈનધર્મ” (Jainism in northen India) નામના પુસ્તકમાં એ વાત વિસ્તારપૂર્વક દાખલા દલીલે ટાંકીને દર્શાવવામાં આવી છે.
ઈતિહાસ પ્રસિદ્ધ વૈશાલીની નજીક ક્ષત્રિયકુંડ ગામ હતું, જે આજે “બાસ' કહેવાય છે. “આચારાંગસૂત્ર' અનુસાર એ કાળે અહીં (ક્ષત્રિયકુંડમાં) જ્ઞાતક્ષત્રિયોને વસવાટ હતા. આ ગામમાં ચરમ તીર્થપતિ શ્રીવર્ધમાનસ્વામીનો જન્મ થયે હતું. આ સાતજાતિમાં ઉત્પન્ન થવાના કારણે ભગવાન મહાવીર “જ્ઞાતપુત્ર' યાને “જ્ઞાતુપુત્ર' કહેવાય છે. આ ક્ષત્રિયકુંડમાં “જ્ઞાત' ક્ષત્રિયો વસતા હોવાથી બાહ મન્થામાં જ્ઞાતિકા' “નાતિકા' અથવા “જાતિકાના પ્રયોગોથી એમના સંબંધે ઉલ્લેખ કરાયેલા છે. કઈ જગાએ “નાદિકા” પણુ કથા છે. “મહાપરિનિવાણુસૂત્ર'માં મહાત્મા બુહના અંતિમ વિહારના સ્થાનોની જે ગણતરી નેધાઈ છે એ અનુસાર મહાત્મો બુહ રાજગૃહથી નીકળી કુશિનારા તરફ વિચર્યાની નોંધ છે. વિહારમાં કેટિગામ અને વૈશાલીનો વચમાં “નાદિકા” નામની જમા છે, જે વૈશાલીથી પહેલે મુકામ ગણાય છે. એ સૂત્રના ચીની અનુવાદ મુજબ ઉભય વચ્ચે (સાત લી) બે માઈલનું અંતર છે. પુરાતત્વ વિભાગમાં જે જે સામગ્રીઓ સંગ્રહાઈ છે એ જોતાં ક્ષત્રિયકુંડ વૈશાલીથી અતિ દૂર નહીં પણ સમીપમાં હોવું ઘટે. “વૈશાલી” સંબંધમાં આગળ જણાવ્યા મુજબ હાલ આટલું સ્વરૂપ વિચારી ઇતિહાસકાર વિન્સેન્ટ સ્મિથ બિંબિસાર યાને મહારાજા શ્રેણિક સંબંધમાં શું કહે છે તે તરફ આંખ ફેરવીએ.

He (Srenike) is credited with the building of New Rajagriha, the lower town at the base of hill crowned by the ancient fort; and with the annexation of Anga, the small kingdom to the east corresponding with the modern district of Bhagalpur, and proba. bly including Monghyr (Mungir). The annexation of Anga was the first step taken by the kingdom of Magadha in its advance to greatness and the position of supremacy which it attain ed in the following century, and Bimbesara may be regarded as the real founder of the Magadhan imperial power. He strengthened his position by matrimonial alliances with the more powerful of the neighbouring states, taking one consort from the royal family of Kosala and another from the influantial Lichehhdvi clan at Vaisali, the latter lady was the mother of Ajatasatru also called Kuníka or Kuniya.
