[વર્ષ ૧૫ The reputation for special sanctity enjoyed by both Benares and Gaya in Magadha among orthodox Brahmanical Hindus adds little to the detailed information available, which is mainly dirived from the writings of Jains and Buddhhists, who were esteemed as heretics by the worshippers of the old Gods. - પરમત સહિષ્ણુતા અને ઈતિહાસની સંકલના અંગેની તત્પરતાને લઈ નાસ્તિક તરીક ઓળખનાર વૈદિક સંસ્કૃતિને પણ પોતાના પ્રથે પૂરતો ન્યાય આપવાનું જૈન શ્રમણે ચૂક્યા નથી.
વૈદિક ગ્રંથોમાં મગધ, અંગ, કેશલ, કાશી અને વૈશાલી સંબંધમાં ને િઉપલબ્ધ થાય છે છતાં પ્રમાણમાં જૈન અને બૌદ્ધ ગ્રંથે જેટલી નહીં જ. વળી એ પણ અધૂરી તેમ જ વિગતના અંકે જોડી શકાય તેવા સાધનો વગરની! ભારતવર્ષના બીજા ભાગે સંબંધમાં તે કંઈજ દિશા સૂચન વૈદિક સાહિત્યમાંથી મળતું નથી. જે કંઈ મળે છે તે ઉપરના પ્રદેશ સંબંધી અને એમાં પણ મગધ અને શિશુનાગ વંશને લગતું જ. એ રિમય : સાહેબના શબ્દોમાં જ નીચે ટાંકવામાં આવે છે. બિંબિસાર–શ્રેણિક અને એના વંશ જ અજાતશત્રુ ઉફે કુનિક કે કેણિક સંબંધમાં જે વિચારણા વૈદિક ગ્રંથમાં છે એ કરતાં વિશેષ બૌદ્ધ ગ્રંથોમાં છે, જ્યારે જૈનધર્મના ગ્રંથમાંનો શ્રેણિક પાલ અતિ
મહત્ત્વનો ભાગ ભજવે છે. એ સંબંધમાં સંખ્યાબંધ ઉદાહરણો ઉપલબ્ધ થાય છે. ખુદ . વિન્સેન્ટ સાહેબ એ વાતને સ્વીકાર કરે છે, જે આગળ ઉપર સહજ જણાશેઃ
In the Puranic lists the earliest dynasty which can clame histosical reality is that known as the Saisunaga, from the name of its founder Sisunaga.
He was, apparently, the king, or Raja, of a petty state, corresponding roughly with the present Patna and Gaya Districts; his capital being Rajagriha (Rajgir ) among the hill near Gaya. Nothing is known about his history; and the Second, third, and fourth kings are likewise mere names.
The first monarch about whom anything substantial 18 known is Bimbisara or Srenika, the fifth of his line. (mg]
જૈનધર્મ વિશે પં. જવાહરલાલ નેહરુને મત
વાસ્તવમાં બૌદ્ધધર્મ અને જૈનધર્મ એ નથી હિંદુધર્મ કે નથી વૈદિક ધર્મ. આમ છતાં આ બંને ધર્મો ભારતમાં ઉત્પન્ન થયા છે અને ભારતીય જીવન, સંસ્કૃતિ અને તત્વજ્ઞાનમાં તેને માટે શાળા છે. બૌદ્ધ કે જેનધર્મ એ ભારતીય વિચાર અને સંસ્કૃતિની સેએ સે ટકા ઉપજ છે પરંતુ તે બેમાંથી એકેમાં હિંદુશ્રદ્ધા નથી.
