CASE STUDY: DENTAL CAMP
CASFALTUOME
Something to smile about
Location: Sayla, Gujarat Date: January 2013 India
Dr Aarti Shah accompanied Dr Sharma, in a dental camp in January 2013 where 162 patients were treated.
An introduction to the Dental Surgery In July 2010 Raj Saubhag Ashram proudly opened a state of the art dental surgery. Previously the nearest dental surgery was in Surendranagar which, for many was an unaffordable distance to travel to.
The modern clinic is equipped to a high standard with a sophisticated dental chair, X-ray unit and autoclave. Dr Sharma is the full-time dental surgeon based here. He is often joined by many professional dentists who volunteer their time to help during the busy dental camps. Camps are being held monthly where patients are seen free of charge. Last year 4319 patients were treated at the surgery.
During the camp 9 cases of oral submucous fibrosis were diagnosed in young males aged 20-25. Having a habit of chewing tobacco causes scar tissue and damage to the lining of the mouth restricting how much the mouth can be opened. One case of trigeminal neuralgia was also diagnosed. Many of those attending had very poor dental hygiene requiring tooth extractions, extensive cleaning and counselling on good oral care.
