________________ Vol. XXXVII, 2014 The Works of Vācaka Umāsvāti 25 18. 20. Kapadia, ibid., p.22; Sāti sūri's Vịtti, p.190. Cf. Kapadia, Ibid, pp.20-22. Also cf. Sānti sūri's Vrtti, p.190. It seems that Kapadia got inspiration from Mody's Appendix D and added several other verses extracted from different sources where these were quoted as of "Vācaka'. (Some of these stylistically, however, do not appear to be from Umāsvāti's writings.) Since the end-kārikās of the Tattvarthādhigama-sūtra are in Anustubh meter, it is likely that, at least a few verses in Anustubh figuring as quotations in Sānti sūri's Vrtti, as of "Vācaka', seem, on stylistic grounds, to be Umāsvāti. I here select the following seven verses : "Uktam ca Vācakaiḥ" Śita-vāt-ātapair-damśair-masakais-c-āpi kheditah mā samyktv-ādişu dhyānam na samyak samvidhāsyati ||" (Kapadia, "Prastāvanā", p.21; śānti sūri, p.95. Could this verse belong to Umāsvāti's work which may have the title Dhyāna-prakarana ?) Also, "Uktam ca Vācakaih : 'Mangalaiḥ kautukair-yoger-vidyā-maintrais-tath-ausadhaih na śaktā maraņāt trātum s-endrā devagaņā api 11" (Kapadia, p.22, Sānti sūri, p.191) And "Vācaken-āpy-uktam : 'Yad-rāga-dosavad vākyam tattvād-anyatra vartate | s-āvadyam v-āpi yat satyam tat sarvam-anftram viduh || (Kapadia, Ibid.) (Cited also by Siddhasena gani in his commentary on 7.9 of the Tattvārthādhigama-sūtra, pt. 2, p.75.) Also see the following verses : "Uktam hi 'Na pitā bhrātarah putrāh na bhāryā na ca bāndhavāh! na śaktāḥ maraṇāt-trātum śaktāḥ saṁsāra-sāgare Il'." (śānti sūri, p.399). And "Tathā ca Vācakah : 'Carma-valkala-cīrāni-kūrca-munda-jatā śikhā | na vyapohanti pāpāni śodhako tu daya-damau II" (Sānti sūri, p.292). The undernoted verse, which contains a series of synonyms, too, perhaps may be from some lost work of Umāsvāti, particularly in view of his love for synonyms :
